In the Philippines a lot of roundup is used by farmers to control weeds. It is true that what we call plaintain here is the saba and cardaba cultivars are not true plaintain. Although we are still safe to say that they are plaintain because all the cooking varieties are called plaintain. But many do not know that all the bananas in the world are hybrids of the bananas that originally came from South Asia, Southeast Asia and Melanesia. The plaintains outside our region are hybrids of the bananas that we have here. The Philippines still has the wild species of banana, the butuhan banana (Musa balbasiana).

While I m glad that we are exporting these fruits in a large scale, I can t help but be upset that behind this cheery video, our farmers are actually struggling to survive with such unhealthy working conditions and poor wages that can t give them a good quality of life. These farmers only earn approx. $28 a week (as of 2018 documentary, probably worse now because of the pandemic and exports dropped by a loooot), and there is no way they can support their families like that. They don t deserve this.

From Costa Rica, as soon as the workers claimed more rights and better payment, health conditions, not spraying during workers are under the bananas, have the houses away from the banana field, this big companies left Costa Rica in big scale to Ecuador where they could do as they wanted. After some decades this soil is not fertil anymore for the use of permanent chemicals and fertilizer, the ground water better you do not investigate. Lots of disadvantages coming along with this mono cultures.

well, I don t think so, How many varieties do they have? Compared to Australia it s very much better. but still, you can t say it s the best. The presenter does not know anything about what other varieties exist.? For example in Sri Lanka, you get an amazing number of varieties and its taste is second to none. even in India. because soil conditions as well as other factors enable them to grow. If you ever tasted some varieties in SL nobody comes to that conclusion. go and experience other countries as well.

I don t think bananas in N. American can come from Asia. They come from central and S. America. And the ones you eat in Canada are CRAP compared to what you can eat in Asia or central, S. America. You re eating something that was harvested before the plant was able to put more nutrition into the fruit since they have to be picked very green, to survive the shipping from even S. America to N. America.

I know people living next to big plantation, their house and garden gets weekly sprayed for free! They have to hide when they hear plain coming and can’t grow vegetables in garden. Honestly, Filipinos dont eat this variety of banana, Cavendish. We have other varieties that are yummier but foreigners dont like them bec they dont look as flawless as the Cavendish. If you come to the Phils. ask the locals what bananas we eat and try it, you wont regret. It is just a pity a lot of people are missing out on other varieties that are much better than the Cavendish. ✌️😁

Having soothing music and showing smiling faces, does not mean what is being done is proper. The mono-culture of bananas on such a large scale and using of pesticides and fungicides through planes is one of the worst possible things you can do. This will reduce the soil fertility and turn soil into sand. All the microbial life in the soil, responsible for the proper growth of plants will seize to exist. This will lead to desertification of the entire landscape. Hope people are smart enough to take necessary measures to ensure sustainable ways of production of bananas.

What chemicals are you talking about? Water is a chemical. air is a chemical. Basically, everything on earth is a chemical. You should go back to school and review your basic chemistry. Wax in food is not bad because they preserve the fruit and it help stop vitamin loss when stored long term. It is only bad if you eat the wax lol. Chlorine is important in making sure that the bananas are clean and it helps prevent a certain strain of fungi that could easily kill all banana in a plantation. if you dont want chlorine in your life then stop washing your clothes or taking a bath from the water in your local water district. What growth hormones?? there is no growth hormones this is a banana not a poultry chicken or livestock lol.

Wow ! I had no idea bananas were being produced using transgenic procedure. I worked on soybean transformation for several years doing soybean tissue culture which is considered difficult. Our lab work actually helped increase the oil and protein content that was higher than anyone in the world at the time. Now our seeds sell for millions of dollars and I sit home unemployed. Ain’t capitalism great !! LOL It’s ok, at least I know my work has contributed to mankind as a whole.
