Thanks for reminding the common folk where products come from, so few people have a grasp where things come from.

The reason so few people have a grasp of where things come from is because of operations like this... think about it.

Why are some wrapped and others not?? I couldn t see anything different between the 2

Brian Brehmeyer

Depends...the buyer may not have wanted to pay for it, lower grades of lumber usually aren t wrapped, could be lumber that hasn t been dried.

Just Wow! This is a very well done video of the process. I also must say that the working conditions look a ton safer and cleaner than the mills we had here in Florida back in the 70 s and 80 s that I worked at.

Im only 14. I dont have much knowledge on trees and the industry of trees, However, I am going to start up my own buisness devoted to re-forestation! I dream one day humans can realise we are killing our planet by doing this and killing many species. We all deserve to equally live on this planet. Because no matter your race, beliefs, disputes. In the end all this wont matter if our world is destroyed. Keep the harmony everyone! <3

john owens

This is giving an economic value for trees so people will plant more . You need to see the wood from the trees

smelly dead cat

I ll cut you some slack cuz, as you pointed out, your 14. However, the commercial Lumber industry is responsible for increasing the number of forest and the density of these forests in North America. For almost 100 years the industry standard has-been plant two for every one harvested. The replanted areas are ready to be harvested 20 years later. Because of this we have significantly increased the forested areas. If you do a little research you will find that they actually benefit the Earth.

CelticWolf

Without logging we wouldn t have furniture among other things

You do realize that logging companies do reseed right?

Tom Novak

@Frank Rand they are younger growth, but not plantation jack pine. It is a mix of Douglas Fir/Larch, Hemlock/White Fir, Engelmann Spruce/Lodgepole Pine/Alpine Fir and possibly some White Pine.

Reggie

i 100% bet you guys theres alot of assholes working there, there always is, some guy or guys who think they have to yell at you just to tell you what to do, its not about the job though its about making others feel misriable about coming to the job. and the reasons others do that to you is because their life isnt good either, so they take it out on you... THIS IS A FACT!!!! like that time i worked in a newspaper plant and a stupid manager lady screamed at people to do this and that.... guess what? we later learnt that she was being abused by her own boyfriend. she would try to cover up her bruises at work but we saw them a few times. especialy that time she came to work with a soft black eye. and that time a couple of us heard her and her abusive boyfriend argue in a vehical. he was abusive, so she was abusibe towards us... and thats why people do it. they want you also to feel misriable. how in the hell do you think AIDS got spreaded? yeah... you should look up the history on that. it will make you mad

Jamin Burkholder

How is foresting done sustainably? Do you raze a forest and replant the whole thing from scratch or do you thin a forest periodically instead? I m curious how that part of it works. Is it privately owned land? How long does it take to cycle a piece of land? What are the wood chips and sawdust used for? Playgrounds?

Does everyone like this video? There are also thousands of tons of wood that recently grew in the forest. The forest is destroyed very quickly, and it grows for decades. Why don t they show a video of the place where these trees were cut? The place where these trees grew is now empty, or at best young trees that will grow only after a very long time. Do you like it?

brian tiger

they never show you the vibrating waste conveyors or the chipping process or hog fuel or boilers

Tom Novak

The majority of the chipping is done inside the HewSaw. A round log goes in and a set number of boards come out the far end. The only thing that needs to be chipped are any defective sections cut out of the center of any boards.

Well produced video. I grew up on timber concession and as such have always love the business. However, I do feel we need to equally replant every tree that is cut down. Trees are the lungs of the earth. Cut down all the trees and see what happens. Mass deforestation is happening all over the globe especially in the third world countries along the equator. Guyana, where I am from is no exception. Its so sad our country has NO measures in place to combat this scourge thats happening on a massive scale: mineral mining and timber extraction the soul culprits. And notwithstanding the agreement Norway has inked with Guyana to curb this malpractice the destruction continues unabated! When when we learn to respect Mother Nature.

Bunny Warren

Find a sawmill who would be willing to do it and ask them. You re going to get a better answer than people posting on the internet with their years of watching YT videos.

Vincent Dumm

Bunny Warren , Have it sawn first, then either kiln dried or air dried with stickers between the layers. Good air circulation, one year per inch of thickness.

PTH

You can do it either way. Let it dry first or get it cut into boards then dry pile the boards. Dry Pile is to put strips of wood between every layer so air can dry the boards.

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10:13) The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the LORD. (Psalms 14:1-4)

Excellent footage & nicely edited but that music is just appalling; garden variety 90s corporate promotional tosh. Actual on site sound recording would be great - is that difficult to capture from the drone? Are high quality microphones too heavy?

De Wolfie

I guess they didn t think about placing mics on the ground or near relative sounds and just splice it in with the footage. Microphones have a really short range when it comes to record quality sound, so placing one on a drone may just be a redunant idea.

Vaagen Brothers Lumber

You are correct! Great find.

Kandi Klover

That s funny. Why is it up there?

Darrel Martin

@Kandi Klover so the operator doesnt have to go all the way down the stairs mid shift to use the washroom, save time save money

Tom Novak

@Kandi Klover the operator stays up on the crane until quitting time. The lost time would create a major shutdown throughout the plant. This crane unloads trucks, feeds and takes away from the sorter, stacks sorted logs in yard and feeds the mill.

Kenny

@Tom Novak yes we have one at the mill i work for hes up there all day but i never see him anymore since I m on a drop sorter all day

I had a side business cutting dead hardwood and cedar off of a ranch, and worked my ass off at it for several years. Then when I saw the massive amount of timber, and the precise operation, I had to laugh at the thought that I once called myself a lumberjack😏 But then again, mine was really more of a hobby, and I couldn t call it work, because I loved doing it so much!

Mark Fritch

As someone who grew up in the lumber and logging industries and worked in nearly every aspect of the forest industries, I deeply appreciate the ingenuity, design and implementation of the Vaagen Brothers mill. Congratulations to you for a world class mill and world class presentation of it.

Cowboy Car Crushing

@Mark Fritch Thank you so much. I thought being a year out it was a shot in the dark. Super Awesome you replying. I like heavy equipment and have limited exposure. But i will ask and keep learning. Thank you 👍. The conveyor system is just freaking awesome. The way it kicks out a log. How much weight is that? Anyway, I m a small loader operator and moving any weight around is a challenge. I like the big Iron and cables and machine and a person can get in tune with it all. It s pure dominance of us (human beings) finding a way to do things the best we can. So the chains keep the top logs from being loose?

Mark Fritch

@Cowboy Car Crushing Yes, I believe it is. If you think this mill is interesting, you should see some of the mills in Sweden. I used to work at a job that required that I visit all the mills in northern Europe once a month to check on their lumber grading of anything that was being shipped to the US. One of my mills was the largest sawmill in Sweden and on the adjacent site was the fifth largest pulp mill in the world. To meet the people the run operations like these is pretty amazing. We could learn a lot from the Nordics on just about any topic you choose. They have really figured out how to make a society work. The Swedes are incredibly active in creating new products in just about any industry. I am of Swedish and German ancestry and love being over there. Just being there I have come to realize why I think and act the way I do. I enjoyed it so much that I just bought a small farm over there and I m moving over this coming year. There is a lot of what I love to do in just the area where I ll be living. Probably the biggest draw for me are the amazingly interesting and generous people I ve come to know there. I encourage Americans to get out of the country at least once or twice in their lives for several weeks at a time and simply take a road trip. Stop when you see something interesting and ask questions. you will be amazed.

Cowboy Car Crushing

@Mark Fritch spent 8 years in army. Went to a couple of war zones but everything else i visited was Awesome. You are exactly right. Visiting other places has done nothing but enrich my life. I ve always tried to learn something of the host nations language. Met some girls and tasted some awesome food. Seen new things that i didn t reject. I applied it to my life. Made me the Cowboy i am today. I m an International Cowboy

Mark Fritch

@Cowboy Car Crushing If you haven t been to Sweden yet, I suggest that you put it on your list. You will appreciate this definition of a cowboy that I heard recently from someone with limited English skills. They were trying to tell an American that they had met something about cowboys and they couldn t remember the word. With their limited vocabulary they came up with was American horse pirate.

Blazinriver

@Mark Fritch I am thinking forest management on a huge scale is the only way to sustain this kind of volume? Is this seasonal work?

Mining Master L870c

@jklbub bublkj Thats sad to hear, my dad worked for the last logging company in my town which is just out side Houston Texas, enviro terrorist ( yes the ones that live dead center of Houston in apartments ) got together and decided they knew what was the RIGHT THING TO DO and that was to block logging operations both on the road and in the woods and since the environmentalist blocked operations the company went under ( and loss of woods ). The only thing that was keeping the company afloat was that they owned like 8,000 acres that they would selective log for pulp wood, well when the company went under these properties went up for sale and exon bought it most of it and cleared what they bought within 4 months, they built a couple chem plants and sold the rest in plots. THE THING THAT UPSETS ME THE MOST IS THAT BECAUSE EXON WAS BUILDING GASOLINE REFINERY PLANTS THE ENVIRO TERRORIST ACTUALLY SUPPORTED IT BECAUSE IT WAS THE NEXT GENERATION SUPER ENVIRO FRIENDLY CHEM PLANT AND NOT WHEN IT WAS A FLIPPING FOREST! This was back in the 80 s Im only 17 so i experienced non of it but he loves to tell anyone that will listen AND THE PLANT THEY BUILT HAS EXPLODED 6 TIMES WITHIN THE LAST 4 YEARS super enviro friendly they said the last explosion put 172,000 barrels of product into the Houston shipping channel which is still being cleaned up today

Dan Koning

@Dr Moriarty // God said Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, *and subdue it;* and rule over the fish, birds and every living thing that moves on the earth [Genesis 1 v28]. Everything is here for people to use as a resource, not the other way around. Nations that are considered 3rd world haven t subdued their resources and they re suffering. You re not saving the planet; its disposable. Btw; God is the one that cursed this planet and He s going to destroy it w/fervent heat [2 Peter 3 v10]; the same one you re trying to save. Its sad that this kind of passion for responsibility isn t seen when innocent babies are being aborted by the millions; instead ppl only care about owls, trees.... In one day they cut 100 trees....and a tree take 5 yrs to grow and replace

Tom Novak

And in that same day they plant 200 trees on another piece of forest land. Makes sense to regenerate raw materials at a rate faster than you consume them. It s called sustainable stewardship! You don t invest millions of dollars in a plant like this and not invest in your source of inputs.

This automation has Improved production and created TONS of jobs.

My ill feelings are with the enviro-whackos that perpetrated the spotted owl hoax that killed my job.

AndreaB

I have a curiosity. In NOrth america seems to me people use more wood than stone/bricks to build houses. Is it a question of tradition or in some areas bricks and stone are too expensive? here in Italy we use only bricks and stone, only in mountains people use lumber.

AndreaB

@Jerms Mason good answer. In fact, Europe is totally brick/mortar oriented, with the exception of mountain zones. We don t have long distances from quarries and we live in a much smaller continent. But our continent is alse heavily populated and forests are gone in every part of europe except scandinavia of eastern countries like russia or ukraine. Yes, we have forests but they re national park so you can t log nothing. Wood is expensive and it cost little less than brick houses so people always opt for the latter. In north america there are also a great offer of DIY build material and tools so people can build themselves garages, houses, etc. Many europeans dislike the idea to like in a wood house, finding annoying repairing it through decades and even not thinking of it as a house. I think both the solutions are good, they are only the results of different situation (pioneers in north america only had woods, and they had to build everything mostly by themselves ).

Jerms Mason

@AndreaB interesting 🤔 that most europeans wouldnt like wood houses is a strange concept. I get it though. North America does have vast forests that seem to go on forever. Even here in new york theres lots of woodland.

AndreaB

@Jerms Mason yeah I remember Niagara falls zone, despite the huge human presence there are forests and groves till horizon. I can tell you the first American settlers often left brick houses in Europe and start from the scrap adapting to the new environment, it s like making tabula rasa of what you used to be and develop new kind of life. That s true expecially for usa, while French Canada and Australia seems on my travel much more close to Europe when it comes to lifestyle. You must think also that western Europe is overcrowded and forests disappeared half a thousand years ago,l. When I live, northern Italy near Venice, we use all the land for crops, and we use clay or stone from the nearby mountains but people really haven t ecological mindset, they don t find useful groves or parks so basically they think who lives in a wood house it s like living as a refugee. And, except for the black forest in Germany or some groves in Northern France, Europeans find perfectly normal living sorrounded by concrete. In eastern Europe spaces are wider, and soviet legislation protected some groves and in Russia even around Moscow I saw a sea of birch forests:but still they live in brick houses and they have wooden houses only in countryside for vacation (dacias). When it comes to Americans living in RV, campers, etc it s simple out of mind for an Europeans, here only gypsies live like that.

AndreaB

@Jerms Mason in the last years in the house market some German firms tried to sell wooden houses but people retreat when they discover the prices are close to brick houses. Maybe because the great DIY/bricolage suppliers are all from deutchsland and they have great quality but also very expensive.

Jerms Mason

@AndreaB yeah, ive heard in many places around the world its difficult to regrow woodland and europe is no different. But in North America they grow back fast because of such thick top soil. Theres actually more woodland in the US today than there was 80 years ago. From 1940 to 1997 woodland in the US increased 320% and still co tinues to grow. And youre luxky youve been able to travel around. Ive always wanted to visit ireland, the home of my ancestors. Maybe someday

The oceans the rivers have plenty of plastic just imagine the build of plastic that been thrown into are seas for 30 40 years etc making new plastics is makings things worse a lot worse but plastic in the seas the oceans could either be used in a permanent place in houses or remelted back into oil . The problem with forests and woodlands 🌲🌲🌲🌲is the world is cutting far to many trees that’s abusing the world because of logging around this planet and this logging is releasing far to much carbon into the atmosphere and theses trees have been collecting carbon for 20-30-40 years and replanting for new trees will take years and logging is cutting faster than replanting and that is why it’s a bit one sided in this world both plastic and wood are all about massive amounts of money and the people who have jobs in this department today are helping poisoning the world we live in and there also helping creating stronger hurricanes storms extreme heat 🥵 stronger winds can you imagine what life is going to be like in ten years twenty years even lesser trees 🌲🌲🌲🌲lesser habitats for wildlife around the world lesser mammals reptiles animals lesser sea life and a lot more danger for humans . The system is build to help jobs and money circulate but not for helping environments and wildlife because it really doesn’t make much money to repair environments and recycling can only be used once on a product so that doesn’t really help don’t get me wrong planting trees is good but it’s not good if forests and woodlands are stripped massively the carbon is released hugely and planting new trees will take years to collect all that carbon . The real truth behind logging it’s creating global warming on a massive scale .

Nick James 73

Video was awesome, except for the part that showed the trucker only strapping once on that top bundle. Tsk tsk mister.

Rest assured he s going to strap it well. They only put one on like that in case they have to adjust for proper legal axle weights. Once all is good they will get a couple more over it. Honestly, it would only require two straps.

they never show the wood chip loading process. I used to load chip cars at precision pine in omak that is one process that I know is vital. this really angers me.

Where is the grading process?

Imagine if instead of cutting down trees, we could make a similar product from let s say hemp... Oh wait, we can. But industry s would loose billions of dollars so we can t allow any change for the better.

Very interesting. Something I never put too much thought into. But yet another incredible operation in the manufacturing industry, that so many people do not understand or appreciate the ever expanding technology that is being used these days. Long gone are the days of heavy manual labor of moving those logs by hand. To me it s just mind boggling to see the machines in use these days in the factories. And then to think of how EACH machine in these factories was made in yet another factory. Technology is a never-ending, amazing thing.

Ben Bancroft

Came for the tree hugger comments about all those trees that have been decimated, I feel a bit let down!

The rapture will happen without a doubt. The rapture will happen much sooner than many believe (less than 10 years according to all the environmental, weather signs , israel timelines etc showing ). It will happen without any warning , not one , in an instant , catching masses of people off guard just like God always does, ie the flood , sodom and gomorrah ~ a rude awakening . No one knows the exact day or hour the rapture will happen is a certainty . THE RAPTURE CAN HAPPEN NOW at ANY TIME make no mistake !! . Please awake to Christ Jesus which is the ONLY hope NOW and dont let yourself find out it IS all true later when its too late and you have been left behind in the most terrible times the earth Has Ever experienced Before and ever will...for anyone who sees this and doesnt know what to do please If you havent given your life and heart to Christ Jesus you will have REAL BIG problems way bigger than any problems you have Ever had If you are left here on earth after the Rapture . After the Rapture The USA , Worldwide , will face More evils , Inner city chaos, firearm wars etc etc ,power and water , food shortages etctec than it Has EVER been seen Before and you surely dont want to be Here then . We Have Time NOW to change , please seek Christ Jesus while there is still time to save ! no one knows the day or hour of the rapture ,But the rapture will start out just like any other day .....The Rapture will Take Place In the day In Broad daylight, sunny day , In an Instant FLASH without ANY warning , and there will be peoples Driver Ids, cell phones ,wallets found in various parking lots , Purses bill folds Found at work etc etc with NO explanation , and People VANISHING so No One can refute it has taken place. .romans 10:9-10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. rapture ready . com Many of those that are left behind were seen and many hung themselves on fences on interstates , and roadways and different places, their cars left by the roadside. . It will be a horrible time , and regret will cause many to commit suicide . NOW is the time, dont wait until its too late seek Please Christ Jesus NOW.

Great video. I finally get to see the crazy guy with the stapler that put 300 staples in the lumber tarps. lol Us carpenters have to remove all those staples.

Have you ever wonder why this thieves are mocking and abusing us with high prices on lumber? On judgement day the wood industry BIG FAT BOSSES are going in first! ☠️💀

Alan Gower

No wonder green house gases r rising all the trees being cut down

John Stack

I live near this mill in northeastern Washington, we selective cut our timber around here. Look at the mountains in the background, they are covered with timber. Your average landowner around here is on a 13 year cycle. That means that they cut trees that are 12 inches or bigger at chest height. And they cut on average 6 to 12 log truck loads a year. It usually takes on average 13 years to make it back to where they started. After 13 years there is magically more harvestable trees, because the ones that were passed over have matured. So for you clueless people it s called renewable resource selective logging. It s not in our best interest to cut down all the trees. It drives me crazy when I see posts by obvious city dwellers.

Alan Gower

@John Stack not a city dweller live in a little town in suffolk England just care about our planet

I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. (Luke 13:5) Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. (Psalms 51:1-4)

Just think of the blood sweet and tears it took to get all that lumber to the mill. As a logger still using cable skidders... the amount of wood you saw I. That video would take 5-8 years for us to produce. N still wouldn’t be able to finance a pack of cigarettes. The small time logger is like the small time farmer now days. Work your nuts into the dirt only to pay the bills

Hardly Davidson

The way there cutting out all the big trees in new Zealand we won t have any to cut out in the next 4 to 5 years. We will start drying out like Australia soon. Our dumb politicians and councils can t see what s happening right in front of there face. And there always going on about global warming well stop cutting down our big trees you dumb asses. Plant more trees and stop having so meany kids we really need the population to come down that will also help with global warming to slow down.

Small logs. I guess there s a market. I don t know what you d use the lumber for other than trim or fence boards.

Ocean Mariner Thanks for the comment. We make 2x4, 2x6, 2x8 Lumber that is used for many products like studs for building houses, trusses, flooring, decks, CLT, tree forts, diy projects and whatever else you can use dimensional lumber for.

cool video amazing system for sorting it all out.

Mr. Random

Wait is there a guy running the claw from inside the claw or is he up top

Vaagen Brothers Lumber

He is not operating the crane from the claw but that would be a pretty good point of view! He is up in the box cab at the top.

Mr. Random

Vaagen Brothers Lumber amazing operator then. The only reason why I said that was there where ore unloaders that the operator ran the machine basically from above the bucket. Hulett unloaders.
